What a story!!
Through each page I felt as if I were right there with the characters as this work of real history unfolds with outstanding intimacy and realism. The story flows smoothly and rings with authenticity. From the first word, the excellent prologue foreshadowed disaster, anguish and heroism. Then each page increased my heart rate and blood pressure as the crew made their journey to war, prepared for action, and flew into combat. My heart aches for what all the young men had to go through to save our country during World War II. Even now, they deserve our truest admiration and our deepest gratitude.

Feels as if the author was part of the crew in 1944
The B-24 bomber “Cherry II” made an emergency landing in my hometown of Höchst (Austria) on June 9th, 1944. This occurrence left such a profound imprint on the conscience of the population that even after 80 years, living witnesses can recount it as if it happened just last week. In his novel, Jason Carlton depicts the events of that time so realistically and precisely that it feels as if he were a part of the crew back then, yet the story remains thrilling for readers.

A vivid and often tragic accounting of the WWII American experience
‘Love of Country Leads Me’ is definitely a ‘page turner’. The reader is made to feel as though they are also experiencing the trials and tribulations of Leo and his buddies. The author is to be commended for his accuracy to the details, as he creates a vivid and often tragic accounting of the World War II American experience. This is a must-read book by any military enthusiast.

I highly recommend Love of Country Leads Me
Love of Country Leads Me is a compelling story from WW2, based on the true events of the author’s grandfather, Leo Carlton. With 50 air combat missions flown out of Africa and Italy, there are many great air combat stories that move the book along. But the real surprise is the emergency landing in Austria — I won’t say more because it was such a shocking outcome. Jason Carlton’s description of life in a prisoner-of-war camp, as well as Leo’s post-war trek across Europe to return home to the woman he loved, is delightful. As one who has read tens of thousands of pages of World War II history, as well as writing seventeen books of military history and fiction, I highly recommend Love of Country Leads Me.

A fun, adventurous tribute to the airmen
‘Love of Country Leads Me’ provides a glimpse into the camaraderie of a bomber crew as they navigate the underrepresented, B-24 storyline of the air war in the European theater. From false arrests masterminded by playful crew members, to tense recollections of missions over enemy territory, Jason Carlton’s story is a fun, adventurous tribute to the airmen who found humor, camaraderie and hope amidst peril.

I was brought to tears
I loved reading Love of Country Leads Me. It was an exciting and compelling read. The historical information was insightful and informative. I was brought to tears a few times throughout the book because of Leo’s difficult experiences.
